Hello fellow anglers! March can be tough if the winds have not settled down. It makes it difficult to get out into the Gulf. There are some close reefs that hold sheepshead and flounder this time of year. Helens Reef just off Cayo Costa, Mary’s just off Gasparilla Island, or even the Power Pole reef. There are also some natural ledges that are in the fairway of the Boca Grande channel out past the bell buoy that hold fish too. There is also in this area a ledge called Boca Ledge and it can be productive as well. To harvest sheepshead, use a small hook and any crustations that are available – shrimp would be my first choice – sand fleas or fiddler crabs. You may also encounter white grunts, lane snapper or mangrove snapper. And if there is plenty of bait around you may encounter some Spanish or king mackerel too. You can troll spoons or some diving lures for these toothy critters, but just remember to put some wire in front of your lure or their teeth may cut your line; about 12” is plenty. I usually buy the thinnest single strand wire and make up my own, the directions are on the package how to build your own. I use a 20- 30 lb. class set up for this mostly when you are trolling you have no tall obstructions to cut your line so it makes things more fun. So if you would like to learn some of these ways I could come along on your boat or we can go on mine. Call Capt. Bart Marx 941-979-6517 or e-mail captbart@alphaomegacharters.com And always remember singing drags and tight lines make me smile. <*(((((>{
