October Fishing Report

Hello fellow anglers, October in S.W. Florida and when we start getting some of the cold fronts to cool the waters the fall migration will begin. Yes the King and Spanish mackerel will start there trip south following the big bait balls. When this starts you can troll along the beach and even out fifty miles and find these guys feeding on the baits. It seems that once a year someone catches a keeper king mackerel up in Charlotte Harbor, the Spanish will come up as far as the U.S. 41 bridge. I was taught to harvest Spanish mackerel you set up a white jig and a silver spoon in tandem and use that to troll, it works well. Also in the Gulf trolling for king mackerel is a very productive way to harvest them. Using a metal planer or a dipsey diver you set it up with a king spoon. I have learned to put wire in front and behind your planer and in front of your king spoon with a ten foot line in between , this will save the rig. If you are trolling keep you eyes on the depth machine to find new bottom fishing spots. Then you can target some red and gag groupers in the sixty foot range, you may also encounter some lane and mangrove snapper in this same areas. I like to use a knocker rig some time with live white bait or shrimp for the snapper. I also like the chicken rig it with squid works well too. As you get out into the seventy to eighty foot range the should be amber jacks and some yellow tail snapper. To target the yellow tails chum is a good investment to get them up into the water colom an some small whole baits greenies or silver sides. So keep your eyes on the fish finder and mark these spots and go back later and check if it is worth naming or deleting. As you do this you will find some spots hold fish when it is cool , and when it is warmer not so much. This also is the time of year you may find the schools of the bull reds while you are trolling for the Spanish or kings. Always check your regulations as they change stuff and ignorance to the law is no defense. Or if you would like to come along with Capt. Bart Marx and see and learn some of these ways call 941-979-6517 or e-mail me at captbart@alphaomegacharters.com a phone call will get a quicker response.
